Wednesday marked an important date in the calendar for us at MACS. It was Nexus’ annual conference (#Nexusconf24) and the focus this year was around sextortion and sexploitation.
Did you know the number of reported sexual offences in NI is currently at its highest?
🔹The PSNI Receive 40-50 reports of sextortion monthly
🔹The main target victims are male and aged 18-25
🔹Sexual crimes are often underrepresented as victims are reluctant to tell
🔹The PSNI advise, ”Don’t panic, don’t respond to demands and don’t enter into communications with perpetrators”
✅ Support for under 18s: report to the Internet Watch Foundation via Childline.
✅ Support for over 18s: contact PSNI/ Lifeline/ Victim support NI/ Get Safe Online.
It was a thought-provoking day, with workshops and talks from Chris Quinn (NI Children’s Commissioner), PSNI, Women’s Aid, inspiring survivors of trafficking, and representatives of the main NI political parties. Thank you, Nexus and all the community, voluntary and statutory agencies, for coming together with the common goal of keeping young people safe.
